Birmingham City Council improve Edgbaston Reservoir for community use

Birmingham City council has devised a plan to protect and enhance the environment in some areas of the city.

The master plan will invest in areas surrounding Edgbaston Reservoir to benefit both the community and the environment.

It intends to build on the area as a safe space and leisure destination to unite communities.

The council sent out a survey to the community for suggestions on the project and has altered it according to the 400 formal responses received from the 2022 consultation.

Samihah Douglas, a new resident in the area, said: "Moving to Edgbaston was a decision I made based on safety and also the places available for me and my daughter to go out in.

"We've been lucky enough to move at a time when the council is trying to make changes to the area for the community.

"My daughter loves the park, so having this space to access is a great benefit to us!"

The reservoir is one of Birmingham’s most important open spaces, combining opportunities for sport and recreation with valuable natural habitats.

Some revisions of the plan include delivering affordable family housing to residents and

the amendment to the design of Osler Park and Osler Place to provide a wider walkway for the public and make space for more green infrastructure.

The local nature reserve will also be enhanced to provide a natural habitat for wildlife, and for visitors to enjoy.

Alongside these amendments, the existing car park at the reservoir will be reopened to provide more spaces for parking away from green space.

With the plan to invest in the future of Birmingham’s environment underway since 2017, Councillor Ian Ward said: “The adoption of this masterplan will provide a clear and sustainable way forward for inclusive development in this part of Birmingham.

“We have consulted extensively over many years and this was a genuine process – we have listened to the feedback and refined the draft document so we have strongest Masterplan possible."
