Thousands of protesters to join in 'March of the Mummies' across the UK

Thousands of protesters have signed up to join in a 'March of the Mummies' demonstration across 11 cities in the UK later this month.

Pregnant Then Screwed was launched in 2015 with the aim to end pregnancy discrimination and campaign for change.

The charity has organised a protest in 11 cities across England, Wales, and Scotland to put pressure on the government to help families with young children by providing more affordable childcare, flexible working, and better pay for parental leave.

The UK has the third worst-ranking maternity pay and the least generous paternity leave in Europe.

Mothers in the UK face a pay penalty of 45% lower earnings in the 6 years after giving birth.

Pregnant Then Screwed CEO, Joeli Brearly, said: "Politicians keep talking about growth but we cannot grow unless we unleash the power and potential of women.

"That is why we want him to: Invest in childcare to create good quality, affordable provision for all children.

"Invest in parental leave so that families can survive when they have a baby and so that children are not born straight into poverty.

"And finally, make flexible working the default so that parents can have children and still earn a living.

"We have written to the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ask for a meeting so that we can tell him the many stories we hear from women and talk with him about what he can do to support them."

Advocates and participants of the protest have shared their support online to raise awareness of the high cost of childcare.

Jeszemma Garratt, who plans to speak at the event, said: "I'm speaking about the March of The Mummies in Birmingham because it's time women stopped bearing the brunt of what should be a society/political level issue"

The march is due to take place on October 29th and will begin on Edgbaston Street in Birmingham for local protestors.
